THE JOURNEY SO FAR...
Ryan’s journey has been one of evolution, passion, and purpose. Beginning as a singer-songwriter, he found himself performing on some of the UK’s most notable stages, captivating audiences with his heartfelt compositions and emotive performances. While his career later shifted toward education, his love for music never waned. Recently, he has returned to the recording studio, collaborating with other artists and exploring new creative directions. His ability to craft songs that blend nostalgia with fresh, contemporary elements has solidified his reputation as both a composer and storyteller, ensuring his music continues to connect with listeners in a meaningful way.
Alongside his personal musical endeavours, Ryan has made a profound impact as a choral director and community leader. Partnering with esteemed musical director David Walters, he has helped establish one of the Southwest’s largest community choirs, creating an inclusive space where people come together through song. His dedication to using music as a means of support led him to launch Blokes Who Sing, a choir focused on men’s mental health, offering a safe and uplifting environment for those who may struggle in silence. Furthering his commitment to choral development, he introduced City of Sons: Youth Male Voice Choir, providing young boys with opportunities to develop confidence and artistry through singing. These initiatives reflect Ryan’s belief that music is more than just performance—it is a tool for connection, healing, and transformation.
Beyond performance and community work, Ryan is shaping the future of music education. He has dedicated himself to creating accessible and structured learning opportunities, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has a chance to develop their musical abilities. Inspired by Zoltán Kodály’s teaching philosophy, his curriculum provides a progressive and engaging approach to music education, equipping students with the foundational skills needed for artistic growth. As a certified voice teacher and vocal coach, he works with singers across the UK, US, and Europe, both online and in-person, helping them unlock their full potential. Whether guiding young musicians, supporting mental well-being through choir initiatives, or crafting music that resonates with audiences, Ryan’s journey is one of unwavering dedication to the power of song.

Ryan is a passionate and dedicated music educator who specialises in nurturing young voices - not only as a vocal coach, but as a guide through the transformative journey of musical discovery. With years of experience working in schools, community settings, and youth ensembles, Ryan brings a deep understanding of how to meet young singers where they are, building their skills from the ground up with care, creativity, and clarity.
At the heart of his work is a commitment to inclusivity. Ryan leads fully inclusive youth choirs and children’s vocal groups that prioritise teamwork, self-expression, and joy in music-making. These ensembles go beyond singing in unison - young singers learn to collaborate in harmony, explore their vocal potential, and grow in confidence both on and off the stage. Performances become a celebration of progress, not perfection, and every child is encouraged to shine in their own way.
Beyond performance, Ryan is deeply invested in the future of music education. He designs learning experiences that are structured yet flexible, ensuring that musical development is both achievable and enjoyable for all students - regardless of their background or prior experience. His teaching is rooted in the educational philosophy of Zoltán Kodály, embracing a sequential and playful approach to learning that places singing at the centre of musical development. Through this lens, Ryan equips young people with the tools to understand music from the inside out - fostering not just technical ability, but a lifelong love of music.
Whether leading a class, coaching an individual, or directing a choir, Ryan’s goal is always the same: to create a space where young voices feel heard, supported, and inspired to grow.
City of Sons is a dynamic youth male voice choir for boys aged 8-16 in Plymouth and the surrounding areas. In 2023, Ryan was entrusted by the Plymouth Youth Music Service to inspire and encourage more boys to engage in choral music across the city. This initiative gained momentum when former PYMS head, Fiona Pendreigh, witnessed one of Ryan’s youth vocal ensembles at Woodfest, a festival led by SEND music advocate, Stu Penman.
Over the past year and a half, City of Sons has flourished into a talented group of around 20 boys from diverse backgrounds across Plymouth. Known affectionately as "The Sons," the choir performs in 2-part harmony, captivating audiences across Devon with their fresh renditions of contemporary choral music. From songs by Bruno Mars to Ed Sheeran, their eclectic repertoire never fails to impress.
In addition to their musical accomplishments, City of Sons has actively contributed to local causes, raising thousands of pounds for charity. Their performances at notable events such as the Plymouth Youth Awards and A Joyful Noise are just a few highlights. One of the most rewarding aspects of their journey is their collaboration with Blokes Who Sing, Ryan’s male voice choir, which he co-directs alongside his friend and musical partner, David Walters. These joint performances allow the younger and older generations to come together, fostering mutual learning and growth through a shared passion for music.
Many members of City of Sons have gone on to secure roles in drama, advertising, and musical theatre, appearing in productions like Les Misérables, Across the Line, and Matilda. At its core, City of Sons aims to provide boys with the confidence to perform, while also breaking down societal stigmas about boys being troublesome or difficult. These talented young men continually prove that, when united for a common purpose, they can achieve incredible things and inspire thousands with their music and camaraderie.
